Stowe in November & December:
How to enjoy Vermont stick season

The New York Times wrote about Stowe. Here’s what they missed, especially if you’re visiting during Vermont stick season.

The Timberholm team is obsessed with the New York Times’ recent article “36 Hours in Stowe, Vermont.” We love it when our mountain town gets the recognition it deserves as one of the most beautiful places to visit and explore year-round.

While we agree with each and every recommendation in the Times piece, there are a few more recommendation gems that only true Stowe locals can provide, especially if you’re visiting during the off-season. Read on for our recommendations for what to do, what to eat, and where to stay during your November Stowe getaway.

Why visit during Stowe stick season?

Stick season, also known as shoulder season, is the time of year when the leaves have fallen but there’s not yet snow. The term has recently entered the cultural zeitgeist thanks to the help of indie star, Noah Kahan, a Vermont native himself, and his album, Stick Season

Stick season takes place from November to mid December in Vermont. While you won’t be able to leaf-peep, there are definitely benefits to visiting during this time of year.

  • Cheaper stays: Stick season is ideal for budget-conscious travelers looking for a good deal on hotels and B&Bs. Since it’s technically the off-season in Stowe, most lodging facilities offer a discount. (If you want to book at Timberholm, use code FALLSTAY for 15% off in November!)
  • Less crowded: Stowe is packed with fall foliage enthusiasts in October and with ski enthusiasts from late December through March. Visiting during November through mid December means you’ll avoid the crowds, skip the lines at local restaurants, and enjoy space on the hiking and biking trails.
